Tóm tắt

The construction supply chain (CSC) is characterized by complex inter-organizational relationships involving multiple tiers of main contractors (MCs) and subcontractors (SCs). This study analyzes the network structure and connectivity patterns of the construction supply chain using a dual-network approach, examining both the directed MC–SC network and the undirected SC–SC network. The research aims to clarify structural differences between formal and informal network layers and to quantify the level of fragmentation. Social Network Analysis (SNA) is applied to empirical data from 37 civil construction projects in the Southeast region of Vietnam during the period 2018–2025, involving 10 MCs and 1,545 SCs. The directed MC–SC network comprises 1,660 edges representing contractual relationships, while the undirected SC–SC network contains 121,340 edges representing co-participation among subcontractors. The MC–SC network exhibits a strongly concentrated structure (bipartite density 0.107; a clustering coefficient of 0, which is expected for a bipartite network; 8 contractor-centered communities; modularity Q = 0.625 on the unweighted network) and extreme fragmentation, with 94.3% of SCs working with only one MC. The SC–SC network is dense by construction (average degree 157.1; average local clustering 0.898), since it is a one-mode projection in which the SCs of each project form a clique; this structure reflects extensive co-participation and potential channels for informal coordination rather than directly observed collaboration. These findings contribute to advancing the theoretical understanding of CSC structure as a basis for seeking solutions to improve CSC effectiveness in increasingly complex project environments
